Hengqin New District Management Committee and Macau University of Science and Technology Sign Agreement to Co-build Industry-University-Research Demonstration Base

Macau University of Science and Technology signed a cooperation agreement to jointly develop the Hengqin Macau University of Science and Technology Industry-University-Research Demonstration Base at the conference room of the Creative Valley, Hengqin, in the morning of November 29, 2019. The demonstration base is the first of the kind of Macau University of Science and Technology to be established in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It also represents a major effort on the part of the University in taking initiative to integrate the strengths of Macao and the Mainland in science and technology innovation, attract and assemble high-end international innovation resources, and promote technology transfer of Macao’s innovative science and technology research outcomes in mainland China. It’s believed that the base will be able to provide greater theoretical and intellectual support for Macao to better integrate into the bigger picture of national development.

At the agreement-signing scene

At the agreement-signing ceremony, Mr. Yang Chuan, Deputy Party Secretary of the Hengqin New District and Director of the Hengqin New District Management Committee, and President Liu Liang of Macau University of Science and Technology signed the cooperation agreement on behalf of the two parties. Guests attending and witnessing the ceremony included Mr. Gou Renmin, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R., Mr. Mi Jian, Director of the Policy Research and Regional Development Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. (DESPDR), Mr. Ung Hoi Ian, Deputy Director of DESPDR, Mr. Zhao Jianguo, Deputy Party Secretary of Zhuhai Municipal Party committee, Mr. Wang Lei, Director of Zhuhai Science and Technology Innovation Bureau, Mr. Niu Jing, Member of Zhuhai Government Party Committee and Party Secretary of Hengqin New District Party Committee, and Vice President Tong Ka Lok of Macau University of Science and Technology.

President Liu Liang delivered a speech

Earlier in May, the People’s Government of Zhuhai and Macau University of Science and Technology signed a strategic cooperation agreement. Afterwards, the two parties have engaged in close talks to jointly promote the implementation of various collaboration projects. President Liu Liang delivered a speech at the agreement-signing ceremony. He noted, “Many of the articles included in the cooperation agreement, which we signed today, are major elements implementing the cooperation framework between the City and the University. Following today’s signing of agreement, Macau University of Science and Technology will work closely with the Hengqin New District Management Committee to take on the most practical and most efficient working attitude, fully utilize the strengths of the Hengqin New District in terms of its geographical locations and favorable policies and the strengths of Macau University of Science and Technology in talents and technologies, adopt the fastest speed and co-grow innovative science and technology physical entities and industry-university-research demonstration bases. This means to establish a headquarter for the M.U.S.T. Zhuhai Research Institute in Hengqin, a branch laboratory of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, and a branch laboratory of the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences. It is hoped that these establishments would become major platforms to support the science and technology innovation and industrial upgrading of Hengqin and in the meantime to foster the adequately diversificaiton and sustainable development of Macao economy.”

By way of the cooperation, Macao and Zhuhai join forces to place emphasis on bringing in high-standard, high-quality science and technology research outcomes, reinforce collaboration in terms of consultational projects, sustain the science and technology vitality continously and promote highly efficient transformation of technology outcomes, foster multi-dimensional interactions and cross-field integrations with respect to technology, industrial and service chain, cultivate a multi-dimensional ecological environment where elements of science and technology industrialization flow at a high speed, and jointly build the “Zhuhai-Macao Pole” at the west coast of the Greater Bay Area International Innovation Center and a new type of industrial highland. This partnership plays a significant role in expediting Macao’s in-depth integration and synergetic development with the western cities, and even entire city clusters, of the Greater Bay Area as well as in safeguarding the stable and enduring implementation of the “One Country, Two systems” principle in Macao.
