State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (Hengqin)

The State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (Hengqin) is under the direction of Professor Jiang Zhihong, concurrently vice president of the Macau University of Science and Technology, and five other members including one academician, two professors, and two associate professors. The State Key Laboratory pays attention to the integration of multi-disciplinary cutting-edge technologies, the innovative technologies and methods of quality control and optimization of traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese medicine compounds, as well as the key technologies and quality standards of high-quality traditional Chinese medicine new drug research and development, and focuses on the research of four fields: innovative technology and theoretical basis of traditional Chinese medicine quality control based on the characteristics of "Three-Dimensions"; study of quality evaluation, development, and utilisation of valuable traditional Chinese medicine such as ginseng; study of quality standard and application of anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and immune traditional Chinese medicine; research and development technology and quality standard of innovative traditional Chinese medicine for cerebral neurodegeneration and metabolic diseases.

State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences (Hengqin)

The State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences (Hengqin) is led by Professor Zhang Keke and six top scholars at mainland and abroad as academic consultants, including one academician, five associate professors, four assistant professors, and two postdoctoral fellows. The scope of research focuses on the Lunar, Mars, small near earth objects and gaseous giant planets, using various means such as numerical simulation, data analysis, high-resolution observation and experimental research to carry out planetary internal structure and gravity field analysis; planetary internal fluid and magnetohydrodynamics; planetary surface impact crater, comparative studies of planetary topography and geomorphology; statistical studies of material characteristics of planetary surfaces; planetary atmospheric dynamics; interplanetary space plasma; sampling / meteorite analysis; and life forms in extreme environments.

Computer Science and Engineering Platform

The Faculty of Innovation Engineering has established the Artificial Intelligence and Smart City Laboratories at the Zhuhai MUST Science and Technology Research Institute, Hengqin. These laboratories are carrying out a series of cutting-edge research in the fields of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and intelligent manufacturing and undertaking research projects such as: “Face structure analysis based on Spatio-temporal information modelling in videos”, ”STEP Perpetual learning based collective intelligence: theories and methodologies”, “Abnormal analysis of crowds in large scale urban spaces”, “Development and industrialization of key technology platforms for virtual reality core engines”, among others.

Meanwhile, the faculty is planning to establish three advanced research centres, namely the Open Intelligent Electric Vehicles Research Center (OIEV-RC), the Innovation Centre for Intelligent Robotics Technologies, and the Laboratory of Security in Cloud System and Data, which have long-term cooperation with outstanding enterprises in China and overseas. To facilitate the in-depth cooperation policy between the Macao SAR government and Hengqin, these centres will transform M.U.S.T.’s scientific research and innovation achievements into technology applications and product development, and cultivate high-end scientific research teams to drive the future of the Greater Bay Area.

System Engineering Platform

The Greater Bay Area is one of the most economically dynamic regions in China and a gathering place for the world's most advanced manufacturing industries. The Greater Bay Area is responsible for the historical mission of national industrial upgrading and technological innovation. With the development of network, computing technology and intelligent technology, the manufacturing system, social service system, transportation network, environmental system, and logistics in the Greater Bay Area have become exceptionally complex. Macao, as the center of the west coast of the Greater Bay Area, has the mission to make important contributions to its development.

The System Engineering Platform will focus on theoretical frontier and technological innovation and gather and cultivate multidisciplinary talents. At present, the main research directions are as follows:

Environment and Sustainability Platform

The Environment and Sustainability Platform is based in Macao and works towards the Greater Bay Area. It strives to carry out comprehensive academic research, especially focusing on exchanges and cooperation with Macao, its neighboring regions, and internationally renowned academic institutions to systematically study rising issues in the environment and development of the Greater Bay Area, to open up new fields, to build a base for the cultivation of outstanding research talents, to construct a distinctive research platform, and to produce more innovative and influential results.

Next Generation Internet Platform

The main research directions of the Next Generation Internet Platform are next generation internet key technology research, industry applications and cyberspace governance, digital currency, cross-border data transmission, and others. It is oriented to establish an international and professional platform, gather high standard leading talents and professional technical talents in the field of next generation internet development, and build an international collaborative innovation mechanism and top expert resource base.

Material Science and Engineering Platform

The Materials Science and Engineering Platform is oriented towards artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, biomedical and health fields, with advanced functional materials as the core, focusing on cutting-edge cross-fertilization and innovation in flexible electronics, wearable smart sensing, biomedical materials, nanocatalytic materials, materials genomics, and other directions. It will initially establish the scientific research foundation of M.U.S.T. in the field of materials science and engineering research, and further develop the Institute to become a regional first-class, advanced, and internationally renowned new materials innovation center and talent training base.

As an industry-academic research base, the first phase of construction has been completed, equipped with advanced high-end research instruments to meet the needs of applied and fundamental research in information display, biomedicine, intelligent sensing, and analog computing. In addition to the R&D office space, the platform also caters to the teaching, conference, and exhibition activities of the Macao Institute of Materials Science and Engineering of the Macau University of Science and Technology. The base is also used for the implementation of Macao's key R&D programs, as well as the development and manufacturing of OLED display equipment and OLED microdisplay near-eye applications, and provides support for the construction of crucial platforms for provincial key laboratories, new R&D institutions, and public service.

Dr. Neher’s Biophysics Laboratory for Innovative Drug Discovery

The Dr. Neher’s Biophysics Laboratory for Innovative Drug Discovery was established in 2016. The Director, Dr. Erwin Neher, is a Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine in 1991, a renowned biophysicist, and a pioneer in the fields of ion channel research and synaptic transmission.

Currently, the Laboratory has the following six main objectives:

  • Initiate and launch key cross-border research projects and establish multidisciplinary research platforms to solve fundamental unresolved problems in common and complex human diseases
  • Use biophysical and molecular biology techniques to reveal innovative drug applications, including basic theory and applications
  • Promote biophysics and multidisciplinary international collaboration in Macao
  • Provide a collaborative platform for innovative drug research in various disciplines of the Macau University of Science and Technology
  • Promote technological cooperation and industrialization in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao
  • Nurture young local scientists and promote science education in Macao

Joint Laboratory of Intelligent Micro Nano Photoelectric Technology

The Joint Laboratory of Intelligent Micro Nano Photoelectric Technology is a provincial-level research platform established by the Guangdong Province to actively implement the strategic deployment of General Secretary Xi Jinping and the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, aiming at pooling the innovative resources of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao to build a world-class science and technology innovation platform.

Joint Laboratory of Discrete Manufacturing Intelligence

The Joint Laboratory of Discrete Manufacturing Intelligence is a joint laboratory of the Guangdong Science and Technology Department of Guangdong Province. In combination with the national strategy, the actual needs of scientific and technological innovation and industrial development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, it aims to promote key technology research and transfer, and to train specialized talents.

Zhuhai-Macao Joint Biotech Laboratory

The Zhuhai-Macao Biotechnology Joint Laboratory is jointly established by the Macau University of Science and Technology and the Biotechnology Research Center of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Natural Sciences of Beijing Normal University. It’s an applied research platform established in response to the economic and social development needs of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the major strategic needs of the country. It aims to integrate the advantageous resources of both sides, combine the major strategic tasks of the country and the Greater Bay Area, target the cutting-edge technology development in the field of biomedicine, gather high-level innovative talents and resources, join hands to promote industry, academia, and research innovation, establish a collaborative and innovative R&D platform, closely integrate scientific research with industrial needs, jointly build a high ground for joint innovation in the field of biomedical science and technology, form a series of independent intellectual property achievements with international standards, and jointly make contributions to the national and regional biomedical industry. By leveraging the unique advantages in terms of policy, location, ecology, capital, support, industry, and talents of the Greater Bay Area, the laboratory will raise academic and research standards to reach that of those leading the field.

The Macao Intellectual Property Service Center (Macau University of Science and Technology) Hengqin relies on the advantages of professional staff and patent literature resources of M.U.S.T., focusing on broad Intellectual Property Rights services such as application / registration counseling, intelligence, asset management and technology transfer, policy sorting and interpretation, whole-process innovation counseling, related training, and others. The Macao Intellectual Property Service Center provides services to universities and related enterprises in Macao and the Greater Bay Area, and promotes the technological innovation and moderate economic diversification of Macao.
